How do I know that I still have a software developer inside of me? Because I still solve problems that way. By writing software. It’s an amazing thing to be able to do. I don’t do it as my “main thing” anymore, but it sure is a wonderful “cooking ingredient”.

Do you ever catch yourself in the awareness of what an utterly amazing and mysterious privilege it is to participate in this thing we call life? To basically be literally burning with it, constantly. To experience what we call consciousness and self-awareness, knowing that it’s all ultimately temporary and small. And yet it is the biggest concept we know? It’s totally wild. And weird. And full of wonder.

I mean, you kind of have to admire this recruiter email… It’s like “I know there’s zero chance of a response, so why bother putting any real detail in. Quota fulfilled.” I also love the AMIGA_SIGNATURE part still being in there…

There is a book of ancient wisdom that contains a message going something like this:
“When I was a child, I talked like a child, I thought like a child, I reasoned like a child. When I grew into an adult, I set aside childish ways.”

At the risk of offending a subset of potential readers, I’d like to put an unconventional lens on this idea and expand it.

I’d like it to go on to saying something like this:

“After having walked alongside others for a while – learning from their wisdom, I started studying my own mind and reflected deeply on what I had learned from others. I came to see how each of them had shaped me on the inside, and I slowly came to understand that only I can decide what my future path is. I may be called to walk with different tribes at different times. I may be called to walk alone. And always, I will be called to become truer to my unfolding self, the path that only I can find, and only I can walk.

When I was an early adult, I talked like other adults, I thought like other adults, I reasoned like other adults. When I started discovering my own path, I set aside the ways of other adults.”

What paradigm do you want to dive deep into today to see if you can potentially transcend it? Money? Status? Power? Leadership? Individualism? What paradigms are missing from this list?

Expert-this, Master-that, Professional-the-other – – much of that matters only for signaling purposes and establishing initial credibility. When the real work starts, what matters more is genuine connection, curiosity and listening.

If your job posting is titled “Agile Scrum Master”, good luck both on the hiring side and on the applicant side. I know without looking what other words are in the job description: drive, monitor, ensure, enforce, escalate, maturity, measure, metrics.

Can you imagine what it might be like, if we poured advertising money and the accompanying psychological tricks into things that did not require spending money, but centered on personal development and the investment of time into that?
